I’ll never forget the first time I saw the Prospect Park Boathouse. I was visiting New York and my friend Kelsey took me here. As we were admiring the boathouse, a swan flew in and had the most ungraceful landing on the water I’ve ever seen. We both were laughing hysterically! It’s a favorite memory of mine and I remember her telling me that they did weddings at the boathouse and I dreamed of one day photographing one here. Fast forward 5 years and here I am!
Maria and David and silly, sweet and super cuddly to each other. They embraced the crazy weather their wedding day threw them with smiles. It literally started to torrentially downpour outside right as Maria was walking down the aisle! Everyone soon rushed inside to figure out what to do next! I have this awesome app on my phone called DarkSky that I use on wedding days that gives me super accurate timing for the rain, how heavy it’s going to be, how long it will last, etc. I opened it up while everyone was a little frantic and saw that it was going to pass in about 10 min. We decided to put the ceremony on hold, and resume once the rain stopped.
The wind was so strong that it blew over a few vases filled with cherry blossom branches. They were really excited about these being incorporated into their spring wedding, so I thought we should improvise! We grabbed the branches and laid them down the ceremony aisle that were in the vases, and the petals from the cherry blossoms filled the ground. I laid them out into a semi circle around where they were going to stand with the help of the amazing staff and the rain stopped, the sun came out, and we redid the ceremony! It was seriously magical! I love the series of photos of the rain coming down and then seeing the ceremony once it was sunny just minutes later!
Embracing the weather on your wedding day is the best thing you can possibly do. This past year I’ve had 2 rainy days and a snowstorm and all those couples trusted me to come outside and take photos in the weather. The result is pure magic and even if it’s just a few minutes, the emotion that comes out of crazy weather days is something you just can’t replicate! I love it! Yes, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows and there are parts of it that aren’t so glamorous, but just believe me when I say that you’re going to have great photos no matter what the weather is if you just give me a few minutes in it! 🙂
So happy I got to capture Maria and David! I hope to have a lot more weddings at Prospect Park Boathouse in the future as it’s a favorite venue of mine here in New York!
